AI News Headlines:
Meta has reportedly started testing its first-ever in-house AI chip, which will be used to train (not run) AI systems.
Meta is working with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) to produce and deliver this AI training chip, which it expects to improve the efficiency of AI training compared to traditional AI chips.
The initial testing phase has been completed, a prototype has been sent for manufacturing, and Meta is reportedly planning a “small deployment,” which it will scale up production for, if it’s successful.
This comes after Meta introduced an AI inference chip last year—which is used to optimize content recommendations on Facebook/Instagram—and wants its chip capabilities to support its chatbot—Meta AI—by 2026.
This is part of Meta’s long-term strategy to reduce its reliance on expensive NVIDIA chips: It currently has around 350,000 NVIDIA chips (making it one of NVIDIA’s biggest customers), and each costs around $25,000, so the $65B budget it allocated for AI infrastructure this year is likely to disappear into NVIDIA’s pocket, pretty quickly, if they can’t get this in-house chip off the ground.
