AI News Headlines:
Cohere’s bold bet on enterprise: Copilot and Vertex AI might have the name recognition, but Canadian startup Cohere says its new AI workspace, North, punches well above its weight. With a $5.5B valuation, Cohere decided early on to stay out of the AGI race, focusing instead on practical AI tools. Co-founder Nick Frosst, an Alphabet alum, told CNBC that was the right call: While his clients constantly request better HR, payroll, and fraud detection tools, “no one has ever asked me about achieving AGI.”
Grok on the go: xAI’s Grok just got an iOS app, letting you use the chatbot without an X account. A standalone site is coming soon, too. Not to mention, a new “unhinged mode” will spew “objectionable, inappropriate, and offensive content, much like an amateur stand-up comic,” according to a recently updated FAQ page. Elon Musk has pitched Grok as a bad boy willing to chat about subjects other chatbots won’t touch.
Adobe’s new special effects tool cuts through the haze: Video models like Gen-3 and Sora are good at rendering solid objects but still can’t grasp transparent elements like smoke and mist. So Adobe researchers built TransPixar, a model that can generate things like wispy clouds, fantastical portals, and shattered glass. Only available as a demo for now, it could one day make SFX accessible to a larger share of creators.
