AI News Headlines:

Everybody wants to buy Chrome :

The US government is seeking to force Google to sell Chrome, a popular browser, as part of the Google Search trial. The Vergecast, featuring Nilay, David, and Jake Kastrenakes, explores the potential buyers and costs of purchasing Chrome. The podcast also covers news, including winning the Webby Award for Best Technology Podcast, Party Speaker Capitalism Updates, Switch 2 purchases, and tariff information. The trial also discusses the implications for AI companies and search competitors, and the testimony of Instagram co-founder Kevin Systrom in the Meta trial.

Meta is trying to clean up Facebook spam:

Facebook is focusing on combating spammy content by cracking down on accounts that "game" the algorithm with lengthy posts and numerous hashtags. Meta is also limiting content to followers only and removing paid content from accounts with unrelated captions. The move comes after Facebook launched a Friends-only feed, which excludes algorithmic recommendations. Meta may also limit the reach of users who share spammy content and make them ineligible for monetization. The company is also testing a feature to detect and hide fake engagement comments and a moderation tool.

ChatGPT is getting a ‘lightweight’ version of its deep research tool:

OpenAI has introduced a new ChatGPT deep research tool called the "lightweight" model, which is cheaper to operate. The lightweight version uses OpenAI's o4-mini model and is nearly as intelligent as the original deep research mode. It offers shorter responses while maintaining the depth and quality expected. The lightweight version is available to free users and paid users, with access starting when rate limits are reached. OpenAI believes the new version is significantly cheaper to run.
